2027 will be Thornbridge Music’s inaugural course. Based at Thornbridge Outdoors in the heart of the Peak District, it is a fantastic opportunity for young string players to let their creativity flourish in the great outdoors. We are so excited to embark on the new adventure that is Thornbridge Music, and we would love it if you joined us from the beginning!

Who it’s for:
Thornbridge Music is for young people who are in secondary school (years 7-11) who are learning a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello or double bass). We actively encourage applications from young people from traditionally under-represented backgrounds. If cost is a barrier to applying, we encourage you to apply for a bursary place.

A Musical Overview:
Thornbridge Music is all about playing music together. There are three group sizes that everyone will be involved in: chamber groups (3-6 people), chamber orchestra (10-15 people) and tutti orchestra (the whole group). By playing together in groups of different sizes, participants will develop their confidence, collaboration skills, independence and many valuable musical skills.
At Thornbridge Music we aim to nurture the whole musician by including daily choir and Dalcroze Eurythmics sessions. Singing is invaluable for general musicianship and has well-documented positive effects on mental and emotional well-being. Dalcroze Eurythmics is an approach to learning music through movement. It aims to enhance musicianship, improve coordination and concentration, and develop the skills needed to be a performer, such as confidence, communication, expression, and creativity.
Additionally, we have evening activities with visiting musicians from different backgrounds and genres. These are an exciting opportunity for participants to broaden their horizon of what being a musician means.

Thornbridge Music takes place at Thornbridge Outdoors, an outdoor education centre in the heart of the Peak District. At Thornbridge Outdoors, they believe in the power of the outdoors to enrich and transform lives and their mission is to widen the horizons of young people through real outdoor adventures in the Peak District. This aligns perfectly with LOAM’s mission and our ambitions for Thornbridge Music. Our core principle is to integrate outdoor learning with shared music making. The staff at Thornbridge Outdoors have ample experience to help us achieve our goal of connecting young people to their local environment.
